Increases to Minimum Wage Rate Premature and Unwarranted

Press Release, 21st July 2015

Limerick Chamber has reiterated Chambers Ireland call on Government to prioritise securing Ireland’s economic recovery and ensuring sustainable jobs growth when considering the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission.

Speaking today, Dr. Orlaith Borthwick, Director of Policy with Limerick Chamber said that “any increase in minimum wage rates threatens to undermine our economic recovery by eroding business cost competitiveness. Ireland’s recent economic performance has been strong, but as the Report of the Low Pay Commission itself points out, this recovery has been patchy and Ireland still faces risks from the external environment. Blanket wage increases also fail to take into account regional differentials regarding the pace of recovery and seriously undermine the delivery of balanced regional growth” .

“Limerick Chamber presented the concerns of our members to the Chair and members of the Low Pay Commission in May. We believe the recommendation of an increase of almost 6% to the National Minimum Wage is both premature and unwarranted as the country returns to economic growth and businesses begin to stabilise. We urge Government to consider the full impact such an increase will have on future employment growth and our national competitiveness”, she concluded.
