Inter-Urban Connectivity with our Neighbours in Galway at Last

Limerick Chamber has today (1/5/14) welcomed the signing of the contract to construct the M17/M18 Gort to Tuam PPP Scheme.

“The construction of this 57km of motorway between Gort and Tuam delivers the last upgrade needed to decrease travel time and costs for our members doing business in Galway. It also broadens the catchment area for Shannon Airport which will further enhance the economic opportunities of the region” commented Dr. Óralith Borthwick, Economist Limerick Chamber.

“Creating an estimated 450 jobs during construction and post construction the €300m PPP project – funded by a partnership between the European Investment Bank and commercial consortia –indicates that the Irish PPP market has once again become an attractive investment option. Limerick Chamber are particularly glad to see that three members of the contract consortium are Irish civil engineering firms, and we hope that reflects the adoption of a procurement policy by government which supports Irish business.

“For several years Limerick Chamber has lobbied for improved connectivity between Limerick and our nearest urban neighbour in Galway. We will continue to lobby government to ensure the project is delivered on time, and look forward to our members availing of reduced travel times from 2018 onward” concluded Dr. Borthwick.
