29 October 2014: Limerick Chamber has welcomed the news that Ireland has moved up four places to thirteen in the World Bank Group Doing Business 2015 rank.
Speaking this morning, Dr.Órlaith Borthwick, Interim CEO, Limerick Chamber said “It is great news overall that we have moved up in the World Bank global ranking system. However, one particularly worrying statistic is Ireland’s performance dealing with planning and construction permits which deteriorated from an already inadequate ranking of 117th place to 128th place. This puts Ireland just ahead of Bolivia and Myanmar in terms of ease of navigating the regulatory framework around planning and construction permits.”
“This is an enormous warning sign for Government that our planning and permit regimes are not fit for purpose and need a radical overhaul. We cannot expect to be the best small country in the world in which to do business if the regulatory framework inhibits development. It is well within our control to dramatically improve in this area and this must be a key focus of Government efforts in the next 12 months.
Limerick Chamber is working with our Local Authority to address such obstacles in our region to support the growth of expanding businesses” she concluded.
