Santa arrives early for Limerick City Businesses

Business Community says ‘thank you’ for early Christmas present

16 December 2013:  Limerick Chamber and LCBA@theChamber have today  thanked City Councillors for the adoption of the proposal by the Local Authority CEO Conn Murray to slash commercial rates in the City by 15.8%; saving businesses in the City an estimated €4.59m.

Speaking after the adoption, LCBA Chair Helen O’Donnell said, “This is an historic day for businesses across the City. Finally the City has been given equal status to the County as an attractive location to invest and do business. We are hopeful that this decision, in tandem with the Retail Excellence Ireland Pilot project and other welcome pro-business initiatives that the local authority are implementing, will act as the necessary catalyst to re-invigorate demand for business premises across the city, and ultimately lead to increased footfall for our members.”

Limerick Chamber CEO Maria Kelly said that without the amalgamation of the two Authorities and the support Limerick has nationally that this announcement could not have happened. “We want to specifically thank Ministers Hogan, Noonan and O’Sullivan.  The direct additional funding of €3.5 million from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government allowed this reduction to occur.  We also want to thank Conn Murray and the Councillors from both City and County for the leadership they have shown.  While economic conditions remain challenging, we are hopeful that 2014 will be a more positive year for our members.  The Budget in October introduced several pro-business measures to support SME growth and cash flows.  This additional boost for our City centre members can only further enhance business activity,” concluded Ms Kelly.
